5 Questions the Houston Astros Must Answer During Spring Training

In the rare case that you feel like being argued with, you should go ahead and pick the Houston Astros to win as many games as they lose in 2014. The general opinion of the varius fans of Major League Baseball seems to be that the Astros will be a losing team forever. That is not realistic however for a franchise that has built a farm system twice as good as most others in the game.

These guys know what they are doing in the front office all the way down to the manager Bo Porter. They want to put a winning team on the field that can be a winning team for the better part of a decade or more, not just buy one for one season. That is where a real and complete rebuild comes in. You cannot make an omelet without breaking eggs and you cannot build a great organization from the ground up without losing for a while.

That time for the Astros is going to come to an end soon. They might well lose more games than they win this season but I guarantee you they will not lose 100 games this season. Those days are over and this team is quickly going to start turning in the complete other direction. Before you know it teams will be wondering how they did it. For now however the Astros have burning questions that pertain to this current and upcoming season.

Crain is potentially one of the better pitchers in the American League out of the bullpen, much less for the Astros. He is coming off of an injury though and has only recently began throwing again. How soon he is able to be healthy will be a big deal for this bullpen.

At the beginning of last season Fowler was on a hot streak that made him a game-changer. Will he be able to develop habits in Spring Training that will allow him to keep on the productive path?

3 – Will Team Extend Jason Castro?

Castro is already considered one of the better young catchers in MLB but he has yet to get an extension. The Astros have only signed one player past one season though and that is Jose Altuve. It stands to reason that Castro is next but will it happen this spring?

2 – Can Lucas Harrell Earn a Starting Spot Again?

When Harrell is on he is one of the better starters in baseball, not on the Astros team but in the game itself. Consistency is the problem of course and that led to him falling out of the starting rotation one year ago. Will he be able to use the Spring Training season to regain his starting role?

This is the question of questions for the Astros. Every single Astros fan I know is itching to see Springer in an MLB uniform on Opening Day. He certainly showed last season that the minors are not a challenge for him. Will he easily gain a roster spot this spring?
