Brandon Lyon a Non-Factor for the Los Angeles Angels

The Los Angeles Angels once again added a retread with nothing left in the tank. The Angels signed much traveled right-handed reliever Brandon Lyon to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training. With arms like Francisco Rodriguez, Luis Ayala and Fernando Rodney recently coming off the open market the Angels reached for a player with a career 4.16 ERA, 1.381 WHIP and a 6.1K/9. Lyon, 34, had a 4.98 ERA in 37 games for the New York Mets last season.

The Angels have a solid bullpen heading into Spring Training 2014. With the likes of Ernesto Frieri, Dane De La Rosa, Fernando Salas, Joe Smith and Kevin Jepsen set to right the ship that capsized last season, there is no room in the Angels’ bullpen for a right-handed, puss-throwing journeyman with nothing left in the tank. The Angels have missed the boat on the three relievers I mentioned earlier and are sitting on their hands with guys like left-handers Oliver Perez, Darren Oliver and Mike Gonzalez still available. With Sean Burnett being the only lefty in the pen and coming back from injury, the Angels could use another left-handed insurance policy.

As the Angels keep offering minor league contracts to one-dimensional players such as Carlos Pena, Yorvit Torealba and Lyon it leads me to believe the big contracts awarded to first baseman Albert Pujols, outfielder Josh Hamilton and starting pitcher C.J. Wilson are catching up with the team causing owner Artie Moreno to tighten up the purse strings. If this is not the case and there is still money to be spent then there is something to be said about upper managements decision making over the last month. With the left-handed relievers that I mentioned earlier still available and starting pitchers Ubaldo Jimenez and Ervin Santana still looking for contracts, the Angels are not addressing the team’s true needs.
