Cleveland Indians Spring Training: 5 Players Who are Sure to Shine

We have all heard at one time or another that there is no ‘I’ in team. Whether as a fan or a small-time athlete, knowing team sports means knowing that simple fact. Many times when sports get professional however that fact changes including in MLB. The Cleveland Indians however remain a shining example of what it means to believe in team more than individual performance.

Sure everyone says it especially at this time of year but not everyone means it. You know by the way they play that some players are all about themselves. An example would be a guy who charges the mound and hurts his season and his team just because he got angry. A team guy wouldn’t do that but would instead understand that his teammate would have his back.

As the Indians go into another season, their second under great manager Terry Francona, they are all about team once again. Somewhat ironically, a good team has to be made up of great individual performances. That does not mean that one or two monster seasons are needed but rather that someone else is a hero every single night. I think that would be a perfect situation for Francona and the Indians in 2014.

Going towards beginning that race they will see some good and promising displays by some of their team during Spring Training. Being that they are Francona’s Indians, this list does not discriminate based on age or experience level. Everyone is given the same chance to blow away the managerial staff for a few weeks during the spring. Here are five that seem ready to do just that.

5 – Danny Salazar

After showing a little of what he is capable of last season, there is going to be a little more pressure on Salazar this year. That could really take him either way but I would expect for him to get started great during the spring and to carry that over into a breakout season.

4 – Carlos Santana

Sometimes the players you forget a little about can be the key to success the following season. I think Santana will, in whatever final role he settles into, become one of the big figures for this team. The Indians and their fans might get a little surprise at just how great Santana will look in spring training if all goes well. We’ll see how it goes.

3 – Elliot Johnson

This name probably comes out of nowhere but if you have not seen Johnson play, you really should. His effort and attitude are infectious. Because of the kind of team the Indians are and how Francona and company have built this roster, Johnson should prove to be a perfect fit somewhere.

2 – Francisco Lindor

Lindor is the shortstop of the future for the Tribe. The future is right now for the Indians and their fans as we will get to see where Lindor is in his development this spring. Relative to his position in the minors, he should have a very impressive spring.

1 – Michael Bourn

I can’t imagine being Bourn last year and not really knowing where in the world he was playing until the last possible few moments. This offseason he has known exactly what to expect and has been able to relax in that. Look for a big rebound season for Bourn beginning very early.
