10 MLB Teams That Will Celebrate Derek Jeter’s Retirement

Many times when a long-time MLB player retires there are questions about whether or not he will be a Hall of Famer when his time comes. That is not a problem when it comes to New York Yankees legendary shortstop, captain and clear Hall of Famer Derek Jeter. He recently announced his retirement and we should all celebrate his decision. So few MLB players are able to leave the game on their own terms and here is one of the recent greats being able to do that.

Congratulations are due all around and I am sure that most every team in the game will celebrate what Jeter has brought to the game. Every single place he plays for the last time there will be a nice ceremony and a fun gift for him and he most definitely deserves it. I can’t wait to see what the most generous gift will be or what the most touching moment will be.

In addition to that however, it is certainly true that some teams will be glad that Jeter retires from a competitive standpoint. It would be said with a smile on their face, “He’s a great player. I’m kind of glad he won’t be destroying our pitching anymore.” That kind of attitude will be happily had by quite a few teams around the league.

Something that I like the most about Jeter is that when a moment is big, he is bigger. Think of one of the Yankees rivals and you can bet Jeter has a great set of career numbers against them. Clearly that would include the teams in the A.L. East but it goes beyond that. Here are 10 teams that will be kind of happy that Jeter isn’t slamming them anymore after 2014.

New York Yankees Cannot Rely on Derek Jeter This Season

10 – Atlanta Braves

On two different occasions during the Braves incredible run of 14 consecutive division championships, Jeter and the Yankees were responsible for keeping their World Series championship total at one. In 1996 and 1999 Jeter had good numbers leading the Yankees over the Braves. For that reason as well as the .339 lifetime batting average against them, they won’t be too sad to see someone besides the captain manning shortstop.

9 – Los Angeles Angels

Not only does Jeter enjoy a career total of 17 home runs and 85 RBI against the Angels but he also battled them twice in the postseason. He collected four home runs in those two series and most recently helped keep the Angels from the World Series in 2009 with an ALCS victory.

8 – New York Mets

If there is a more obvious rival for the Yankees than the Mets, it could only be one Red team from Boston. Any series against the Mets was always a big deal. That being the case, you can guess what Jeter did. How about a .368 career average along with 13 home runs and 43 RBI in fewer games than he played against A.L. opponents? You guessed it; big games equals a big performance by Jeter.

7 – Detroit Tigers

During their postseason rivalries the Tigers actually were able to defeat the Yankees three times but Jeter still was tough in those games. Regular season however produced much more of a problem for the Tigers. He had a chunk of homers, 74 career RBI but most impressively he has 9 triples against the Tigers. He’s only got that many against one other team and they are from the AL East.

While not a natural rival of the Yankees, the Mariners might be glad they don’t play the Yankees more than they do. Jeter enjoys a hefty average against them as well as 19 career homers and 77 career RBI. Considering they don’t see them often, those marks are very impressive.

5 – Texas Rangers

Jeter has killed the Rangers during the regular season with a .329 average, 24 home runs and 90 RBI. Again they don’t see the Rangers as often so that makes those numbers more impressive. In addition to that, the Yankees and Jeter kept the Rangers from getting passed the ALDS on three separate occasions in the late 1990’s. During two of those series wins Jeter put up a series average well over .400.

4 – Toronto Blue Jays

Here begins the list of teams that Jeter helps the Yankees defeat every season. He has great numbers here as well but most importantly is instrumental in keeping the Blue Jays from rising in the AL East, along with the rest of the Yankees, for the last couple of decades. His career total of 105 RBI against them surely doesn’t help the Jays cause.

3 – Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays and Yankees have developed a more series rivalry over recent years which makes the games a bigger stage towards the end of each season. How does Jeter usually react in such situations? His .306 average, 21 home runs and 121 RBI against the Rays over his career certainly speaks as an answer.

2 – Baltimore Orioles

Jeter has 9 triples against the Orioles as well as 24 career home runs and 136 RBI. That RBI total and his incredible 66 career doubles mark the highest against any team in those two offensive categories. In addition to that and the fact that Jeter and the Yankees have helped keep the Orioles just away from the division titles they may have one, he enjoys an average of about .400 against them over two postseason series victories in 1996 and 2012.

1 – Boston Red Sox

Was there any doubt? The Red Sox are one of few teams that have kept Jeter just under a .300 career average but they weren’t able to shut him down. His 25 home runs and 125 career RBI against them speak to that. Sure Jeter kills the Orioles but he does have more home runs against the Red Sox and dare I say more dramatic moments.

Boston and the Yankees have met three times in the ALCS during Jeter’s career and he helped them win two of three series with a collective 4 home runs and 10 RBI. This is the most storied rivalry in sports so of course they would be at the top of this list. Having said that, I feel sure that the Red Sox send off will be nothing short of breath-taking when the time comes.
