Imagine how excited the Cleveland Indians and their entire roster will be when Opening Day 2014 hits. They’ll be like the ‘little train that could’ must have felt the second time she had a chance to make that trip over the hill. The differences between last season and this season are few but important. The most vital difference between the two seasons of course is that just like that little engine, they know they can this season.

It might not be predicted by anyone anywhere but they don’t care. They know they can take a group of guys into the season and have as good of a chance as anyone of walking away with the American League Central at the end. One similar thing to last season is the fact that everyone will not make the roster. Someone is going to be left out or left behind.

Anytime a team is right on the edge of crossing the threshold to constant competitiveness like the Indians are however, you can expect chances to be tossed around. In that situation there are several young and non-roster invitees that have a real shot at the Opening Day roster. There are still only so many spots to fill however.

The Indians do not need five third baseman in other words. That is just obvious. Here are five players who are likely to be in the category of the unfortunate ones who do not make the final roster. Give a look at use the comments section to let your opinion be heard.

5 – Jose Ramirez

As stated before the Indians just have a ton of options at several places. Quality though he is, I think Ramirez will just fall a little too far down the depth chart this spring.

4 – David Adams

Adams can mainly play third and first base for the Indians. They have so many possible options there that Adams would really need to blow it up to climb to a roster spot for the opener.

3 – Trevor Bauer

Bauer has a strong chance at the fifth starter spot but that appears to be ready to go to Carlos Carrasco who Terry Francona is just raving over. If Carrasco does not get the spot it would probably be Bauer but it looks like he might be keeping to the minors to remains stretched out.

2 – Shawn Marcum

The exact same thing that was the reasoning for Bauer goes for Marcum as well. They could try to stick him in the bullpen but he has made starts in the minors and will probably slip there once again.

A lot of people expect Francoeur to play much better this spring. I hope he does but I think it will still be too little to crack the opening day roster.
