So we all know what MLB‘s opening day means for baseball fans. Heck, even if you aren’t a baseball fan, opening day is one of the most exciting days of the year. I mean, you have to wait an entire five months to watch regular season baseball again — it seems like an eternity. Well, St. Louis Cardinals legend Ozzie Smith and Budweiser are teaming up to send a petition to the White House asking for the annual MLB Opening Day to become a national holiday.
Yes, you read that correctly. Smith and the famous beer supplier are trying to do something that millions of working class citizens have been trying to do for years. When I mean millions, I really mean that many people have been playing “hooky” on MLB’s opening day. In fact, a recent surveyed showed that 22.2 million Americans over the age of 21 have called in sick on their team’s opening day.
Smith and Budweiser released this commercial to show what their mission is:
People may be thinking, well that’s true, it should be an opening day, while others think this is probably the dumbest idea ever thought of.
However, with 22.2 million people out of commission on the same day every year, why not make it so the entire day is just dedicated to America’s pastime? Not everyone has to watch the games, but to give them a day off on likely the most unproductive day of the year seems just right.
If the petition gets over 100,000 signatures, the White House and President Barack Obama will be forced to take action and recognize it.
Let’s go, people. Let’s make MLB Opening Day a national holiday.
