Doug Fister Solid but Not Great in Washington Nationals’ Debut

The much anticipated Spring Training debut of Doug Fister with the Washington Nationals went by with a bit of an average feel. Fister did strike out a couple of guys but he also gave up a run on two hits. Because it happened during the first spring start for him everything is looked at in a completely different way. That doesn’t mean that he gets a free ride however. Many will expect him to be nearly perfect every time out.

I truly hope that the entire Nationals fan base understands how brilliant the deal was that brought Fister into the fold. Everything you read speaks about him coming out of the shadows of Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander to be a big star but Fister doesn’t have to change a single thing to add what the Nats need him to add. This is a world class starting pitcher.

He gave up a run on two hits in a couple of innings today which is absolutely a non-issue. It means as little as the Nats three wins mean this spring. Sure it means a little bit but everyone knows that things like that are all viewed in perspective of how far along the pitcher and team are in their spring schedule.

One thing that the Nats fans need to understand is that Fister is not perfect. There is a reason Clayton Kershaw’s recent run has been so amazing and that reason is that it is rare. Hopefully the great things that Fister can do throughout the season will outweigh the few Nats faithful who expect every pitcher to toss a shutout every time out. This guy is an amazing addition to the team no matter what any of his spring starts look like.
