Rookie and Veteran Starters Dominated When New York Mets Beat Atlanta Braves

The Atlanta Braves and New York Mets had two completely opposite pitchers going for their respective teams in a recent Spring Training game. Many things about the spring schedule do not matter for various reasons. A 5 game losing streak means nothing at all and the same goes for a 5 game winning streak. It is each inning and each player’s time in the game that matters. How then did rookie hopeful Noah Syndergaard and veteran hopeful Freddy Garcia compare?

Garcia is towards the end of his career. He’s done a great job keeping things alive and resurrected himself last season with the Braves. This spring he finds himself once again without a roster spot. He is actually fighting for his baseball life as he has clearly stated that it is the majors or home for him.

On the other end of the spectrum was Syndergaard; the obvious answer to last year’s question of why the Mets would trade R.A. Dickey. Syndergaard is their number one prospect and he has not disappointed so far with his work. The game opposing the Braves was his first official spring start. So what did the two of these complete opposite pitchers heading in different directions have in common?

They were both dominant. Syndergaard is proving he might be ready for MLB this season while Garcia has thrown 5 perfect innings this spring in a clear statement that he is not done. If Syndergaard’s excellence in the minors has not convinced the Mets of his MLB readiness then his spring so far should. If Garcia’s excellence during the final month of the season and postseason did not convince the Braves that he still has it, maybe his spring will. Isn’t baseball a wonderful game?
