The Miami Marlins are not expected to win any kind of division title this season. Some think the team could be sneaky this season and actually compete for a playoff spot. With the way the Marlins are coming out of the gate against the Colorado Rockies, the sneaky expectations could come to fruition.
Miami has taken the first two games from the Rockies behind brilliant starts from Jose Fernandez and Nathan Eovaldi. However, finally something is happening to the Marlins that has not happened in the past two years coming out of the gate.
There are runs being scored at Marlins Park.
Marlins newcomer Casey McGehee has been leading the run support. In just his first two games with the Marlins, McGehee has tallied five RBIs in his first seven at-bats. His .298 average so far is a nice surprise for the 31-year-old California native. McGehee spent all of last year in the Japanese Pacific League after bouncing around a few major-league teams in 2012.
Miami’s infield was in doubt in beginning of the offseason. Pondering trades for other third baseman, McGehee came back to the majors on a one-year deal with Miami. He is being used a stopgap for when the time comes to call up top prospect Colin Moran.
So far, the plan has worked out perfectly and although it is just April, McGehee seems to be quickly re-assimilating to major-league pitching after being overseas for a year.
