MLB Series Preview: Atlanta Braves vs New York Mets

Even though the Atlanta Braves lost on Sunday, they still have won two consecutive series to start the MLB season. The New York Mets have not been as fortunate in their early season series' in 2014. As the Braves open their home season, the Mets will try to do what they can to move themselves from the bottom of the National League East. If they aren't careful they will get left behind very quickly by the other four teams.

Though the Braves still won the series with the Nationals, they certainly could have used the bat of Evan Gattis during the game on Sunday. He is the man on the team that has proven to be able to take any pitcher out of any park no matter how good of a game the guy is having. Watch for that to be a factor this week.

Both Uptons have struggled some early this season but there are reasons to believe that both could break out of their respective slumps this week against the Mets. B.J. has looked much better in his last several at-bats and Justin is just at the edge of dominating every time he touches the bat. Look for a show from them this week.

It is difficult to place the same struggling nick names on Dan Uggla this year so far. Give the guy some credit for having a very good start to the season. He doesn't lead the league in hitting but he is having a much better year and continuously puts better swings on the ball this year. He does lead the team in RBI.

Neither team is far off of the bottom in batting average or runs scored for the season. The Braves are lower than the Mets in runs scored and the Mets are the closer to the bottom team in batting average. Both need to play better with the bat this week.

As we just pointed out, both teams are struggling a little at the plate right now. One of the two could break out but it is more likely that the series will come down to pitching. Assuming that is the case, it would give the Braves, who own the second best ERA in MLB, a clear edge.
