Change Will be Good for Ike Davis and Pittsburgh Pirates
There should really have been little surprise when the Pittsburgh Pirates traded for first baseman Ike Davis on Friday. During his time with the New York Mets, Davis has been up and down but more recently has struggled. Because of his struggles, some might be surprised that the Pirates went out to get him but this should have been suspected.
First of all this trade was rumored during the offseason MLB Winter Meetings. The Pirates were in the market for a first baseman or at least another option on that corner of their infield. Davis might not be the greatest first baseman in history but he is a solid all around defensive player and has offensive potential that could always come back around.
Many suspect that a change of scenery might be a good for Davis and that is possible but it should also be mentioned that he was a well liked player for the Mets. That is also another good thing about the trade for the Pirates however. They have a pretty good team atmosphere there anyway and the addition of a clubhouse personality like Davis will do nothing but help that chemistry.
Whether or not he produces like he is capable of producing in the field, Davis is still a good trade for the Pirates then. He will improve their clubhouse, is a good option on defense and at the very least can provide a platooning option at first base if nothing else. Look for this to be a key moment in the Pirates season when looking back from September or maybe October.
