Early Grades for Seattle Mariners' Starting Rotation and Bullpen

The Mariners are a tough team to grade in this regard so far, because the rotation has been mostly patched together to begin the season. In an ideal world, they would presumably be very strong one-through-four with Hernandez, Iwakuma, Paxton and Walker. But three of those names are currently irrelevant. If the Seattle Mariners can ever get their projected rotation on track this season, it would undeniably be the strength of their organization.

Record: 3-0
1.91 ERA
0.74 WHIP
39:3 K:BB

Supreme Court has been in session for King Felix in every start thus far. He has been dominant early on, and is in Cy Young form only three weeks into April. Not much more needs to be said.

Record: 2-0
2.25 ERA
0.67 WHIP
13:2 K:BB

Two efficient outings, both of them leading to wins for Paxton. But the sample size is small, because he landed on the DL early. If he were healthy, which the M's badly need to be the case, his rating would probably be an A.

Record: 1-1
2.16 ERA
1.02 WHIP
10:6 K:BB

Elias has done a decent job so far of holding up the middle of the Mariners' rotation through all the injuries. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his three starts, but he did not last beyond the fifth inning in two of them.

Record: 0-0
3.27 ERA
1.55 WHIP
4:6 K:BB

Young was signed in March for depth and insurance purposes. It's good the Mariners had the forethought to bring him aboard, because they have needed a lot of help in their rotation early on. His first appearance produced a quality start, but Young was roughed up later on versus Miami. Again, a small sample size. We'll see what Young can do in his next projected outing against the Houston Astros.

Record: 1-2
7.50 ERA
1.78 WHIP
12:8 K:BB

Ramirez started the season on a high note, with a seven-IP, two-ER and six-K performance versus the Los Angeles Angels. Since that game, he has faltered greatly. Only 23, the young Nicaraguan has lots of time to turn things around.

Rodney is 3-of-4 so far in save opportunities and sports an ERA of zero, while striking out eight and walking three across 4.1 IP. Danny Farquhar has been impressive, while Charlie Furbush and Tom Wilhelmsen need to improve. Collectively, Seattle's pen has an ERA of 3.19, good for 11th best in MLB which is rather impressive, considering that they are almost guaranteed to be called upon for a healthy workload with the M's rotation in disarray.
