One of the big reasons why the Boston Red Sox were World Champions last year was because of their outstanding defense. They never beat themselves and it seemed like they could always make the big play when it counted. This year has been the total opposite.
The defense has been pretty bad so far. Xander Bogaerts is going to be a great player someday, but Boston feels the loss of Stephen Drew. Drew especially turned his defensive game up a notch during the postseason, making a few plays that almost reminded me of Jose Iglesias.
A.J Pierzynski gets somewhat of a pass because he is learning a whole new pitching staff, but let’s face facts, he has looked pretty bad behind home plate. One of the words that keeps on coming up is stiff and that is a good description. He hasn’t looked comfortable at all and it shows.
The outfield defense has also not been steady, although now that Shane Victorino has returned, that should improve quite a bit. Grady Sizemore has been a great comeback story, but he doesn’t currently look like the Gold Glove center fielder he was with the Cleveland Indians. Boston also sees him more as a corner outfielder at this point.
It just seems as though Boston is in a rut and is having a hard time getting themselves out of it. Like I said before, Victorino is back and Will Middlebrooks shouldn’t be too far behind him. At that point, Boston will have the projected team that they were hoping for when the season started. And at that point, there won’t be time for any more excuses.
