Even though the July 31 trade deadline is more than three months away, there are plenty of deals MLB teams could be making right now. It makes sense for teams who know the direction they want to be headed because they can get a player for an extra three months if they're a buyer and can get a better package of prospects if they're a seller. Here is one deal each team should make as soon as possible.

Oakland Athletics

Athletics Get: 3B Chase Headley

Padres Get: IF Nick Punto, RHP Bobby Wahl, LHP Dillon Overton

It's likely that Headley is on his way out after the season anyway, so this makes sense. He wouldn't have to go very far and Oakland would have a very solid lineup with this addition. They would have to give up Wahl and Overton, two of their best pitching prospects, but it could help them make a deep run.

Texas Rangers

Rangers Get: RHP Jason Hammel

Cubs Get: RHP Luke Jackson, LHP Victor Payano

The Rangers got the raw end of the Matt Garza deal a year ago, so why not try again? This time, Hammel is more likely to re-sign with the team after the season and Texas would be giving up far less. Still, the two minor league pitchers would add to the Cubs' organizational pitching depth and Jackson has a chance to be a very good mid-rotation guy.

Los Angeles Angels

Angels Get: LHP Mark Buehrle

Blue Jays Get: RHP Alfonso Alcantara, PTBNL

This could be an under-the-radar move that pays off big for the Angels. They need more pitching depth and while Buehrle is aging and far from elite, he could give them a veteran presence to add to their pitching depth and he'd give them a chance to win every time out.

Seattle Mariners

Mariners Get: OF Alejandro De Aza

White Sox Get: LHP Tyler Pike, Cash Considerations

The Mariners need to add a few hitters to truly have a shot at the playoffs this season, and De Aza could be an underrated addition. He's fallen out of favor in Chicago after showing promise and could definitely be on the block. Getting Pike would be a good first step to building up a White Sox farm system that's almost nonexistent.

Houston Astros

Astros Get: RHP Drew VerHagen, PTBNL

Tigers Get: 1B/OF Chris Carter

Carter will get his fair share of strikeouts, but he can also hit the ball out of the ballpark with the best of them. Detroit could use some of that pop after dealing power hitter Prince Fielder over the offseason.

Detroit Tigers

Tigers Get: OF Michael Brantley

Indians Get: C James McCann, OF Don Kelly

Brantley really seems to be coming into his own and the Tigers could likely have him for relatively cheap. McCann is a top 10 prospect in the organization, but Brantley could be a fixture in the outfield for the next 5-7 years if he keeps progressing.

Kansas City Royals

Royals Get: LHP Chris Sale

White Sox Get: RHP Kyle Zimmer, OF Jorge Bonifacio, LHP Cody Reed

Even though he's been one of the best pitchers in the American League, the White Sox would really benefit more by trading him. He's already shown he's going to have arm issues and they need to get rid of him soon. This would instantly make the Royals on level ground with the Tigers in the division.

Minnesota Twins

Twins Get: RHP Shane Watson

Philadelphia Phillies Get: OF Sam Fuld

This would be a very low-key move, but would benefit both teams. The Twins would add to their pitching depth and the Phillies would get a speedy outfielder to platoon and pinch run.

Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox Get: RHP Kyle Zimmer, OF Jorge Bonifacio, LHP Cody Reed

Royals Get: LHP Chris Sale

As mentioned before, the White Sox desperately need to bolster their farm system and this would do just that. By the same coin, the Royals would get a huge boost in this move and would show how serious they are about winning right now.

Cleveland Indians

Indians Get: OF Yangervis Solarte, LHP Ian Clarkin

Yankees Get: RHP Justin Masterson

There's a good chance Masterson is gone after this season and he's a budding star. He would fit well into the Yankees' rotation and make them even better than they already are. Solarte and Clarkin would be a very solid package for the Indians to receive in return.

New York Yankees

Yankees Get: RHP Justin Masterson

Indians Get: OF Yangervis Solarte, LHP Ian Clarkin

This deal just makes too much sense for either team to pass up. The Yankees will be able to win the AL East with this move and the Indians will build up more for the future. Depending on how the season is going though, the Indians might hold on to Masterson in an effort to compete in 2014.

Boston Red Sox

Red Sox Get: OF Giancarlo Stanton

Marlins Get: LHP Henry Owens, RHP Allen Webster

Stanton, who is a budding star, is at his highest value right now. The Red Sox could use his pop in the middle of the lineup and it would be worth giving up two of their top-five prospects to get him. Putting Owens and Webster in the same rotation with Jose Fernandez would make the Marlins' rotation solid going forward.

Tampa Bay Rays

Rays Get: OF Oscar Taveras, RHP Alexander Reyes

Cardinals Get: LHP David Price

This has the makings of a blockbuster deal. The Cardinals would instantly be the favorites in the NL, even if they have to give up their top prospect in Tavares. There's a good chance Price is gone after this season anyway, so the return would be worth it for the Rays.

Toronto Blue Jays

Blue Jays: RHP Alfonso Alcantara, PTBNL

Angels Get: LHP Mark Buehrle

This move is low-risk, high-reward for the Blue Jays. Buehrle is at the twilight of his career and Toronto can still get a decent prospect in return for him.

Baltimore Orioles

Orioles Get: 2B Darwin Barney

Cubs Get: RHP Branden Kline

Barney isn't a great hitting infielder, but he's one of the best defensive middle infielders in baseball. He would add depth to the Baltimore infield at a low cost.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Dodgers Get: 2B Darwin Barney

Cubs Get: LHP Victor Gonzalez

The Dodgers could be interested in Barney as well, as they're not sold on Alex Guerrero. Barney could add a veteran presence and professionalism that Los Angeles could need as they enter the playoffs.

San Francisco Giants

Giants Get: OF Nate Schierholtz

Cubs Get: RHP Chris Stratton, PTBNL

Schierholtz is a former Giant and San Francisco would be wise to deal for their former player. He would give them a lot of depth in the outfield and could platoon. Stratton is a solid prospect, but the Giants' window for contention is closing.

Colorado Rockies

Colorado Rockies

Rockies Get: RHP Edinson Volquez

Padres Get: C/1B Will Swanner

This is a very low-key move, but it would help the Rockies' rotation, which is in desperate need of arms. By adding Volquez and a few others, they could actually compete in the NL.

San Diego Padres

Padres Get: 1B/C Will Swanner

Rockies Get: RHP Edinson Volquez

This deal benefits both teams in the long and short term. Volquez can help the Rockies now while Swanner can help the Padres in the future.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks Get: RHP Jason Hammel

Cubs Get: RHP Matt Stites

Even though the Diamondbacks are struggling, they can still get back in the race. That begins by adding quality pitching arms. Stites is a solid prospect, but Hammel could instantly make Arizona better.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Pirates Get: OF Nate Schierholtz

Cubs Get: RHP Nick Kingham

Even though they're division rivals, dealing Schierholtz to the Pirates makes sense for the Cubs. After losing Garrett Jones, the Pirates need more outfield depth and Schierholtz would provide that.

Milwaukee Brewers

Brewers Get: OF Michael Brantley

Indians Get: RHP Devin Williams

Brantley is a budding star and the Brewers could use more outfielders. Depending on if the Indians think they can hold onto Brantley, they may demand a higher price.

St. Louis Cardinals

Cardinals Get: LHP David Price

Rays Get: OF Oscar Taveras, RHP Alexander Reyes

This deal has the potential to shake up the baseball world. With Price, the Cardinals would be the team to beat in all of baseball in all likelihood.

Cincinnati Reds

Reds Get: OF Chris Carter

Astros Get: OF Yorman Rodriguez

The Reds are in desperate need for some extra power hitting. Carter would provide that and Rodriguez could be yet another a piece to add to the Astros' very solid farm system.

Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs

Cubs Get: RHP Jason Hursh, RHP Mauricio Cabrera

Braves Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija

Adding Samardzija to an already solid rotation would be huge for Atlanta. GMs Frank Wren and Theo Epstein have a great working relationship, and could pound this deal out. It would add to the Cubs' minor league pitching depth.

Atlanta Braves

Washington Nationals v Atlanta Braves

Braves Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija

Cubs Get: RHP Jason Hursh, RHP Mauricio Cabrera

This deal makes a lot of sense for both sides. It seems evident that Samardzija doesn't want to re-sign in Chicago. Atlanta is somewhere he can compete for titles and that's what he wants.

Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies

Phillies Get: OF Sam Fuld

Indians Get: RHP Shane Watson

The Indians get a solid arm in exchange for a platoon outfielder. On the other hand, the Phillies get a lot of speed, something they could definitely stand to add.

Washington Nationals

Washington Nationals

Nationals Get: 1B Ryan Howard

Phillies Get: OF Brian Goodwin, OF Michael Taylor

This would be a shocker if it happened, but it makes sense. Howard still has upside and the Phillies could get some very good hitting prospects in return for him. Howard's bat may be the missing piece to the Nationals' championship puzzle.

New York Mets

New York Mets

Mets Get: OF Mac Williamson

Giants Get: LHP Jonathan Niese

The Giants could stand to bolster their rotation with Niese, while this could pay off big time for the Mets down the road. Williamson could be a very good major league outfielder in time and they would be parting with an aging Niese.

Miami Marlins

Getty Images

Miami Marlins

Marlins Get: RHP Henry Owens, RHP Allen Webster

Red Sox Get: OF Giancarlo Stanton

The Marlins could trade Stanton right now at his highest value and get a boatload for him. Owens and Webster tossed in with Fernandez would give Miami a very dangerous top of the rotation in the next couple seasons.

I understand the logic behind the move, and it does make sense on paper for both teams, but I would be completely shocked if the White Sox traded Chris Sale to the Royals, or any other AL Central team for that matter.

  • Anthony Murphy

Edison Volquez is on the Pirates, not the Padres. Plus they have Greg Polanco in the minors ready to take over RF, no sense in trading one of their top prospects for a 2-month fill in

  • Al-Kendall

Most of the listed trades make no sense to teams that already have minor league talent to fill the same results as the trade.
