There was a time about two years ago when I did not have a lot of positive things to say about Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox. It seemed as though he had reached a peak and wasn’t going any further with his talent which is just about endless. It also looked like he was following some bad leadership, but that all changed last year.
In spring training he apologized for how he had acted the year before and that seemed to help him start to win back some fans. He also pitched extremely well last year and particularly down the stretch. It looked like he was getting stronger and stronger as the season went on until he reached the postseason where he was lights out.
Flash forward to this year where he has been absolutely amazing. Maybe it is because he is a free agent next year so this might be some sort of contract run, but who cares? He might be pitching the best we have seen him in a very long time. In his most recent outing he struck out 15 Oakland Athletics batters and was dominating. Lester has become an absolute ace of the rotation, and there’s no doubt about it.
Boston needs to be very smart and understand that quality left-handed pitchers are the rarest of commodities. They must do whatever they can to get him signed. Use the money that they didn’t spend on Jacoby Ellsbury to get Lester back in the fold for the rest of his career. Could you see Lester in a New York Yankees uniform? Me neither.
