It's time for the first cross-town matchup of 2014 between the White Sox (15-17) and Cubs (11-18). This season's first throwdown will be a four-game set from Wrigley and US Cellular. Both teams are winners of four out of the last ten, with neither clicking on all cylinders as May gets into full swing.
Let's take a look at all the action that's set to unfold.
Jose Abreu, Adam Dunn and Alexi Ramirez have led the way for the Sox over the past seven days in the hit department. Both guys have six hits, with Abreu topping the power department (2 HR, 3 RBI).
Overall, the Sox are hitting well on the season, ranking in the top 10 in average, runs scored, RBI and HR.
Wellington Castillo's bat has continued to improve in 2014. He's hitting .282 overall and .438 over the last seven with two RBI. Starlin Castro has also continued to perform well at the plate, hitting .350 with seven hits over the last week.
Unlike the White Sox, the Cubs are near the bottom of several major hitting categories (R, RBI, avg).
GM 1: Jose Quintana (1-2, 4.00 ERA) vs. Jeff Samardzija (0-3, 1.98 ERA)
GM 2: Hector Noesi (0-1, 7.20 ERA) vs. Edwin Jackson (2-2, 5.24 ERA)
GM 3: Travis Wood (2-3, 3.35 ERA) vs. John Danks (2-2, 5.00 ERA)
GM 4: Jake Arrieta (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Scott Carroll (1-1, 0.68 ERA)
GM 1: Sox (WCIU), Cubs (CSN) - 7:05 PM CT (Wrig)
GM 2: Sox (CSN), Cubs (WGN) - 7:05 PM CT (Wrig)
GM 3: Sox (WCIU), Cubs (CSN) - 7:10 PM CT (Cell)
GM 4: Sox (CSN), Cubs (WGN) - 7:10 PM CT (Cell)
Both teams are currently treading water under the .500 mark, with the Cubs being in slightly worse shape. Neither team is expected to make a run at the postseason, but a series win here would keep one team in the thick of things early on.
The Cubs have actually been coming around as of late, and Samardzija still doesn't have a win. I'll predict he gets his first of the season and the Cubs take this series 3-1.
