Slugger David Ortiz is one of the greatest hitters in Boston Red Sox history, and his accomplishments (especially in the postseason) are well documented. In the past few weeks however, Ortiz has stepped up and shown exactly why he deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as other Red Sox greats.
Ortiz has hit safely in 11 of his past 12 games, and is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak. In those seven games, he is a ridiculous 15-for-29 with a staggering five home runs. In his last two games, the numbers for him are even more absurd. In that time, he is 7-for-10 with five runs scored, four home runs, and six RBIs.
Ortiz is on an absolute tear right now, and he is a huge reason why the Red Sox are still in favorable standing in the AL East. From helping to carry the city of Boston after the horror that was the marathon bombings, to arguably winning the World Series single-handedly for the team a year ago, there is no limit to what he can accomplish both on and off the field.
There is no doubt that Ortiz is the heart and soul of the team. He is proving to everyone why the Red Sox were right in giving him a contract extension this year, and he is cementing his legacy as one of the greatest designated hitters of all time.
