The New York Yankees placed starting pitcher C.C. Sabathia on the 15-day DL, and the 200 game winner could use it. With a record of 3-4 and 5.28 ERA in his eight starts this season, Sabathia just does not look like his normal self. With right knee inflammation shelving the Yankees starter, he could use the time to rest not only his knee, but his mind.

As Yogi Berra once said “baseball is 90 percent mental and the other half is physical.” With Sabathia getting rocked in the early season, there is a chance much of it is due to mental mistakes that he cannot erase. The Yankees are in need for pitching as they have lost both Sabathia and Michael Pineda to the 15-day DL, and Ivan Nova to season-ending surgery.

They could use the services of Sabathia not only because he serves as the team’s ace, but because the pitcher is known for being an innings eater and saves the team from going to the bullpen. The workhorse has pitched more than 200 innings every season since he was with the Cleveland Indians in 2007. The ace did come back with good news as he visited Dr. James Andrews, who confirmed it was just inflammation and nothing more serious.

Sabathia has shown that he is committed to being durable and healthy for the team as he entered Spring Training having lost weight. The Yankees can only hope that he comes back healthy both mentally and physically. The organization needs him to move forward as they continue their quest to stay relevant in the AL East race.
