Trade rumors are starting to heat up around MLB, and Jeff Samardzija has already been the subject of plenty. Whether or not the Chicago Cubs ship the pitcher out of town remains to be seen, but there's no doubt that these five teams would all gladly take him off of their hands.
The defending champions are not exactly in dire need of starting pitching, but there are signs of tiredness early in the season. Many of the younger pitchers who helped take the title home for the Boston Red Sox are still growing used to the rigorous needs for a long and healthy MLB season. Bringing in Samardzija could take a load of pressure off for the pitching staff that looks to stay competitive.
The Mariners have brought upon themselves the mentality of win now. That is not going as planned. Currently sitting in third in the AL West, the team could use some starting pitching. They tried for Tampa Bay Rays' ace David Price but did not like the asking price. The Cubs should not be asking for as much with Samardzija.
The Rockies' offense has been one to watch early on. Leading the majors in many of the major offensive categories, they would love to have some pitching to go with that. The Rockies could bring in Samardzija, who is having a great year with no offense to help him out. This match seems great together. With the team only three games back, Samardzija could make them NL West front-runners.
The two-time defending AL West champs are holding up well with 30 wins. The loss of Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin to Tommy John surgery could be a sign to trade for Samardzija. He could help the team pull away from the competition in the AL West and seal up the division for a third straight year.
The team has been battling with injuries all season, similarly to their fate in 2013. With a majority healthy lineup, they need to add depth to the injury-plagued rotation. The team could use an anchor as CC Sabathia and Michael Pineda figure themselves out. Samardzija could be a major fix to the team and help bring back the momentum the team felt in April.
