Finale Against Rockies Provides Atlanta Braves' Julio Teheran Ace Opportunity

Last season the biggest problem the Atlanta Braves had with the starting rotation was that there really was no ace to speak of. Kris Medlen was good most of the year as was Mike Minor and Julio Teheran, then a rookie. Tim Hudson was still with the team at the time but was injured a little over half way through the season and Paul Maholm certainly was not ace material although he provided stability on the back side of the rotation.

Having split the first two games of the Colorado Rockies series provides the Braves a great chance to solidify who their ace is. It was a problem for many that the team did not go out and trade for David Price or another solid and proven ace but that can be washed away today. Why is the Sunday finale such a big chance you might ask? It is a great chance because Teheran is taking the mound and could solidify his position as the ace of the team.

One of his fellow players called him the ace of the staff recently and they are probably right. He did have one snafu in San Francisco but that can be forgotten after his complete game shutout of the Milwaukee Brewers versus Yovani Gallardo. The finale against the Rockies provides the chance for the final decision however and here is why.

The Braves are on a roll of late. They have won five out of their last seven ballgames and have done so with a much improved offensive attack. The pitching has been very good as well but has been overshadowed most of the time by the late inning heroics by the offense. The team really needs to win the finale of the series however in a bad way. Saturday they lost after scoring only one run and the tendency could be to fear the offense is taking the high road once again.

None of that would matter if Teheran takes the ball and shuts down the powerful Rockies offense however. The opposing pitcher has an ERA over five. If he shuts that powerful attack down and leads the Braves to a second tough series win against a top of MLB opponent, he will be the ace in most minds of Braves fans. He’s your game one starter of the World Series and your go-to guy against Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw. That is who Teheran is if he pulls off a much needed series win today for his team.
