Though the Atlanta Braves did the right thing in waiting to see how Tommy La Stella did in triple-A, it was time to call him up to the majors. Not only was it time but it will prove to be a very good decision for this team. Even though the Braves lost the debut game he played in, he provided exactly what they need for him to provide.
On defense he showed that he can make tough and smart plays. He looked right at home in MLB and wasn’t starstruck in the least. That level of confidence speaks to his ability that has shown through at every level. Look for the same good things that have happened at every other level to show through in MLB. Defensively he was exactly what they need.
Offensively the Braves did very little in the third game against the Boston Red Sox but La Stella was two for four with a couple of singles. Will La Stella be able to do all of the offensive things by himself? Of course he won’t. What he will do is put the bat on the ball and consistently get on base. That is something the Braves have not gotten from their second baseman in quite a while. Look for it to make a difference in a slow and lasting way.
