New York Yankees Trade Rumors: 5 Players Who Could Be in Pinstripes Soon

The New York Yankees are ready to make at least one or two big acquisitions this summer to ensure that Derek Jeter’s last season in the Bronx doesn’t go down in flames. The Yankees have the necessary prospects to get some quality deals done, even if that means leaving their farm system depleted. In New York, it’s all about winning in the present, which is exactly why these five players could be in pinstripes soon.

One of the acquisitions will be a for a quality starting pitcher to bolster the rotation. Cliff Lee is a logical choice because of his veteran experience and stellar work on the mound. Even though Lee’s contract is a bit outrageous for an aging right-hander, the Yankees are one of the rare teams that would actually be able to pull it off.

The Chicago Cubs are eager to deal a couple of starting pitchers, which means Jason Hammel will be available to the highest bidder. The right-hander has had his ups and downs in 2014, but the reason to pay attention is because he’s on pace for a career year. Considering the dismal run support the cubs have offered this season, a 5-3 record and 3.08 ERA is rather impressive.

The Yankees need a replacement at shortstop for legend Derek Jeter. With no one worthy internally, New York would be wise to make a deal now. The most obvious choice would be to acquire J.J. Hardy in a trade. It’s hard to imagine that the Orioles would deal within their division, but if the Yankees are prepared to unload prospects then it shouldn’t matter too much. Hardy’s going to land in New York one way or another.

Everybody wants in on the David Price sweepstakes. Here’s another example of an AL East divisional rival most likely being unwilling to trade within the division. However, money talks, and that means New York could find themselves with an outstanding left-hander if they are willing to go above and beyond in a bidding war. One thing that will fall in their favor is that Price has struggled a bit this season, which means the price could drop.

The Cubs are going to trade Jeff Samardzija at some point this summer. For them, it’s just a matter of finding a team that is willing to give them a solid return. Samardzija’s 1-4 record might turn off some fans in New York, but the real focus must be on his fantastic 1.68 ERA. If the Yankees somehow acquired Samardzija in a trade this summer, it would be a game changer down the stretch.
