Most teams that feel like they can reach the postseason and compete there will be trying to add players this July at the trade deadline. Of those teams, here are five clear contenders that are just a player or two away from being put over the top.

The Yankees are virtually always buyers at the deadline and they should be again this season. Most likely, they will try to add an extra pitching arm to bolster their rotation. A big question is whether they will go after a top-tier or second-tier starting pitcher. Either way, they are again just about a piece away from competing for a World Series.

The Angels finally aren't underachieving in the beginning of the season, so that means they have their eyes on the postseason for the first time in a while. Even with a stacked lineup, the team could try to add an extra bat, as well as a bullpen arm. Their bullpen isn't very deep, so adding another arm in the pen could pay big dividends.

Toronto is one of the best teams in the American League right now and they'll surely want to add a few pieces in order to be there by season's end. They have made it known they are after a second-tier starting pitcher rather than an ace. If they can add a solid No. 2 or 3 starter, then they have a very good chance of reaching the postseason.

The Cardinals traditionally don't deal for many players at the deadline, but they could be a little more desperate this season. They're hovering a little above .500 and are still chasing the Brewers in the division. In order to be put over the top, they might try to add another arm to the rotation. If they go that route, expect them to try and deal for a top-tier starter.

After a disappointing 2013 season, the Giants are back on top of the baseball world. They have the best record in baseball and are red-hot right now. In order to have more depth in the rotation, they may try to add an arm. On top of that, they could try to add a bat or two to give them more depth on the bench when the postseason comes.
