One of the reasons that the Boston Red Sox have struggled so much this season is because of their offense, and that can be tied directly to the performance of their outfield. I cannot recall an outfield of the Red Sox struggle as badly as the current players have. One of them has been Jackie Bradley, Jr.
Bradley has barely had his batting average above .200 and he has admitted on more than one occasion that he is lost at the plate. Unfortunately, it shows. But in center field, he has been absolutely amazing. He has made seem effortless some plays that looked impossible. Not only that, he has an absolute cannon for an arm and has doubled up a few baserunners this season.
Because of that, he deserves to stay in the majors and work through this prolonged slump that he has been in. His defense is just way too valuable to give up. In my opinion, he has been the best center fielder that the Red Sox have had since Ellis Burks. I might even say that he is as good as Fred Lynn. If the Red Sox had any sort of offense at all, they could just hide Bradley in the number 9 spot and it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. However, because they have been struggling so badly offensively, Bradley’s lack of hitting shows up in a big way.
Bradley is going to figure it out and even if he hits about .240 or .250, what he brings to the table defensively makes it all worth it.
