Nothing has been better for the Atlanta Braves over the last few weeks than watching their new second baseman actually hit the baseball on a regular basis except possibly for the huge fact that Tommy La Stella just refuses to strike out. The move of La Stella to the leadoff position has led to a few struggles in his steamroll of opposing pitching. This has led some to question the move of him to the leadoff position. Despite those struggles, it is still possibly a very good move.

There are a couple of factors that could be in play for La Stella. First of all as some have mentioned, batting leadoff could lead to different approaches by pitchers. Secondly, he has been around long enough for the opposition to try and figure some way to get him out and he now just has to figure out how to adjust. Also it is possible that some pitchers are actually pitching around La Stella when B.J. Upton is behind him in the batting order. All of these can be overcome however.

Everything would improve if La Stella makes the necessary adjustments and the balls start to drop for him. That could happen at any time and is almost a matter of luck. Fredi Gonzalez could shift the lineup around a little bit more to attempt to get La Stella someone else behind him that will force more fastballs across for him. One thing that might not be the answer is to put Jason Heyward back in the leadoff position. His hot hitting has looked very attractive in the middle of the order.
