The timing seems right for the Cubs to trade ace Jeff Samardzija this trade deadline as he doesn't seem ready to sign an extension and he still has over a year of team control left. As their biggest trade asset, Samardzija is going to attract plenty of suitors. Here are the five teams most likely to make a deal for the ace.

Potential trade pieces:

LHP James Paxton
RHP Edwin Diaz
LHP Luiz Gohara

Past top prospect Taijuan Walker, the Mariners have plenty of other nice pitching prospects the Cubs could be interested in. They are competing in the AL West right now and could use another arm, but Seattle is more likely to trade for a smaller piece like Jason Hammel.

Potential trade pieces:

RHP Luis Severino
LHP Manny Banuelos

With one last hoorah with Derek Jeter possible, the Yankees could go all out for a World Series title in 2014. They have quite a few works in progress on the mound with their young trio. If the Cubs could nab two of the three and then a solid position prospect, they would likely ship Samardzija to New York.

3. Atlanta Braves

Potential trade pieces:

RHP Lucas Sims
RHP Jason Hursh
RHP Mauricio Cabrera

The Braves make sense as a trade partner for a number of reasons. First of all, they and the Cubs have a history of making deals at the deadline. Additionally, they have a bunch of pitching prospects who the Cubs are interested in, and they may be desperate enough for a quality arm to overpay.

2. Toronto Blue Jays

Potential trade pieces:

RHP Aaron Sanchez
RHP Marcus Stroman
RHP Roberto Osuna

The Blue Jays are deep with pitching talent and the Cubs know it. Chicago has already tried to deal Samardzija to Toronto, but the price wasn't right for the AL East leaders. Now contending for a pennant, the normal cellar-dweller Blue Jays may sell the farm for a shot at a title.

1. San Francisco Giants

Potential trade pieces:

RHP Kyle Crick
LHP Edwin Escobar
LHP Adalberto Mejia

The Giants have everything the Cubs need in a partner for Samardzija. He fits a position of need in San Francisco, they are desperate enough to overpay for him and they have a plethora of pitching prospects to send back. Combining Crick and anyone else would be more than a fair package for Samardzija.
