The Kansas City Royals are having a solid 2014 campaign thus far at 40-37 and are currently just three games behind the AL Central-leading Detroit Tigers. The franchise has not made the playoffs since 1985, and if they want to end that 28-season drought, they could use some reinforcements on their roster for the stretch-run. Here are five players they should target before the trade deadline.

Every contending club can use depth in the outfield during a pennant chase, and while Chicago White Sox OF Dayan Viciedo won't overwhelm statistically, he could be used as a solid fourth outfielder and DH who has some pop from the right side of the plate. It will not take a king's ransom to bring Dayan to Kansas City, and he is under control until 2018.

Reuniting David Price with current Royals ace James Shields might seem far-fetched, but Tampa Bay's front office knows Kansas City's farm system well from the Shields trade which could help make the two clubs an ideal match. An addition of Price to the Royals' rotation would make them the best staff in the AL Central, and among the top in all of MLB.

Martin Prado is a perfect fit for Kansas City considering he plays second and third base; both positions where the club could use a solid veteran presence. Omar Infante has been pedestrian, and Mike Moustakas has been mainly disappointing despite glimpses of power, making Prado a great fit in Kansas City. Prado could also be used in the outfield and even at shortstop if needed, making him a huge asset to any club.

Chicago Cubs ace Jeff Samardzija has been the talk of the trade season in 2014, with rumors swirling that he will land on a myriad of different teams. Not only would Samardzija be a great addition to an already solid starting staff in Kansas City, but adding him before another AL team does could help the Royals to an easier playoff path.

Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has been healthy and productive thus far in 2014 and would give Kansas City a veteran presence; someone who has playoff and World Series experience, which is something the club desperately lacks as constituted. Utley could be the missing piece to put the Royals over the top and into the playoffs.
