Interest is heating up for Cubs' ace Jeff Samardzija, especially now that he reportedly turned down Chicago's most recent contract extension offer. There are plenty of teams willing to deal for him if the price is right, and here are five deals that could happen within the next month.
Blue Jays Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija
Cubs Get: RHP Marcus Stroman
RHP Alberto Tirado
C A.J. Jimenez
Stroman is already pitching in the big leagues and has been very impressive so far. Tirado has a lot of upside and Jimenez would add to the Cubs' organizational catching depth. Overall, this trade would make sense, especially for the Cubs.
Yankees Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija
Cubs Get: LHP Ian Clarkin
RHP Luis Severino
LHP Manny Banuelos
If the Cubs are willing to wait in order to get a bigger return, they could make this deal with the Yankees. None of these pitchers are on the cusp of the big leagues, but all of them could be starters in the pros. So if the Cubs are willing to wait a couple years for the return on them, this is the right deal.
Giants Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija
Cubs Get: RHP Kyle Crick
LHP Ty Blach
RHP Joan Gregorio
The Giants are loaded with pitching talent, and Crick has the potential to be an ace in the big leagues pretty soon. If the Giants are willing to part with their top prospect, they are definitely the favorite to land the Cubs' ace.
Braves Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija
Cubs Get: RHP Lucas Sims
RHP Jason Hursh
The package of Sims and Hursh would likely be enough to send Samardzija to the Braves, an organization he's likely to re-sign with. Both are relatively close to the big leagues and could join the Cubs' rotation pretty soon.
Mariners Get: RHP Jeff Samardzija
Cubs Get: LHP James Paxton
RHP Edwin Diaz
LHP Luiz Gohara
It's more likely that the Mariners will trade for the Cubs' Jason Hammel, but if they decide to go big, this is what it could take to get Samardzija. None of these guys are elite prospects, but all of them have the ceiling of a No. 2 starter in the majors.
