Chicago White Sox 2014 Potential Trade Targets

The Chicago White Sox are currently hovering around the .500 mark which means that they have a decision to make on if they want to be buyers or sellers this season. While losing Avisail Garcia early was a big blow to their offense, Chicago has had a strong, solid lineup all year thanks in large part to rookie phenom Jose Abreu. If the Sox do decide to makes some moves to try to catch the division leaders, here are five trade targets for them.

5. Neal Cotts

Neal Cotts is a former member of the White Sox. Chicago desperately needs help in the bullpen. Cotts has had a solid season and a half down in Texas. If the Rangers decide to move some pieces, Cotts could be a cheap acquisition to try to improve the bullpen for the White Sox.

4. Yasmani Grandal

Hitting in a pitcher's park, Yasmani Grandal's numbers may not leap off of the page, but the potential is still there. The Sox need help at the catcher's spot. It is one position that they did not try to upgrade during the winter. The Padres could also view Grandal as expendable with top prospect Austin Hedges in the minors. Moving to a hitter's park could be a spark for Grandal within a deeper lineup.

3. Grant Balfour

Again the White Sox need relief help. Tampa Bay is another team that could start to unload players at bargain prices. Grant Balfour's return to Tampa has been unkind as he has been removed from the closer's role. Perhaps a change of scenery could help the veteran save his season. It could be a small risk that Chicago is willing to take.

2. Jason Hammel

Behind Chris Sale, the White Sox could also use some rotation help as well. Unfortunately, Sale is not a fast pitch softball player to where he can pitch every game. One guy that could bolster the rotation is cross-towner Jason Hammel. Hammel has had a nice year in 2014 pitching for the Cubs. He is posting a good strikeout to walk ratio and has become an attractive trade piece on the market.

With Avisail Garcia on the DL, Dayan Viciedo and Alejandro De Aza have been hit or miss in trying to pick up the slack in the lineup. Marlon Byrd could be a short-term fix as another bat in the lineup with consistent pop. Chicago is a homerun friendly park in which Byrd could succeed. The Phillies are a club that could be looking to dump players and Byrd is a capable veteran player that could be available for a stretch run.
