The New York Yankees need to shake things up like a California earthquake. Miraculously, they find themselves two games out of first place. However, they can find themselves in first place with some big moves both internally and through trades.
Many are calling for the team to bring up-and -coming second baseman Robert Refsnyder to the majors to take over for struggling Brian Roberts. They compare his stats to that of longtime second baseman Robinson Cano when he was in triple-A. Calling him up before the All-Star game would get him some time in the majors for the team to see what he capable of doing for the last three months. This could be crucial now that rookie Yangervis Solarte has calmed down with the bat.
It is no secret that they need help with the pitching staff as well, and are looking to be active with the trading market. They are expected to be active in the race for pitchers Cliff Lee, Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel. It would be considered a big letdown if the team were to go into August without one of them throwing every five days in pinstripes.
They are hoping that things work out for C.C. Sabathia, who is doing well on his recovery, and to get a little something out of Michael Pineda, who is expected to get back in August.
For the Yankees to be two games out of first place speaks to how well of a job manager Joe Girardi has been doing with the team. It should not come as a shock as he was able to lead the team to a winning record last season with all the injuries they faced. Just imagine what he can do when he has health and production on his side.
