Despite all the buzz surrounding the MLB trade deadline, there are actually some contenders that only have to make minor moves in order to position themselves for the playoffs. There are other teams on the outside looking in that have to make bigger and riskier moves in order to be playing baseball in October. Here are five teams that fall into the latter category.

As of June 30:

4th place in AL East
7.0 games out of 1st place

The defending champs have a lot of work to do before the deadline, and that starts with pitching. Their rotation has been wildly inconsistent and if they hope to climb back into the race, they will have to make a serious splash before the deadline.

As of June 30:

3rd place in AL West
6.5 games out of 1st place

The Mariners have been one of the most surprising teams in baseball this season and may be one major move away from a playoff appearance. Landing someone like Jason Hammel would go a long way in locking up that spot.

As of June 30:

2nd place in AL Central
3.5 games out of 1st place

The Royals have been impressive while sticking around with the Detroit Tigers in the Central. They seem to have several starters that are No. 2 and No. 3 caliber starters, so adding an ace like Jeff Samardzija or David Price could really bolster their playoff hopes.

2. Pittsburgh Pirates

As of June 30:

4th place in NL Central
8.0 games out of 1st place

The Pirates have slowly but surely crept back into the Wild Card and divisional discussion. Even though they're on the outside looking in still, some of the moves they made last year paid off. This year, they will have to make more of a splash in order to compete.

1. Washington Nationals

As of June 30:

2nd place in NL East
0.5 games out of 1st place

The Nationals don't necessarily need to make a splash to make the playoffs, but they do in order to compete for a World Series title. With all the injuries they've sustained, they need to add some quality depth both in the rotation and in the lineup.
