After a strong month of June, the Cincinnati Reds are preparing to approach the July 31 trade deadline as potential "buyers". With many options available for the team to improve, who are the top five players rumored to be targets for the Reds?

J.D. Martinez is an interesting possibility for the Reds. While he struggled in his time with the Astros, Martinez is having a breakout year with the Detroit Tigers -- hitting .312 with nine HRs, 32 RBIs and a .351 OBP. Under control through 2018 and 26 years old, Martinez could be a valuable asset for the Reds now and in the future. Detroit ranks 14th in starting staff and 29th in relief staff in baseball, so there may be a fit for a trade.

4. Alex Torres - Relief Pitcher (San Diego Padres)

In his first full major league season, Alex Torres has been a stud in the bullpen for the Padres. The left-handed reliever has a 1.89 ERA in 33 games with an opponent average of just .195. Controlled through 2020, Torres could be the left-hander needed to fill the Sean Marshall void. Seemingly back in rebuilding mode, prospects could be beneficial for the Padres as well -- just like their previous trade with the Reds for Mat Latos.

3. Michael Brantley - Left Fielder (Cleveland Indians)

The emergence of Todd Frazier and Devin Mesoraco means the Reds don't have to focus on obtaining a power-hitting right-hander. For the Reds, Michael Brantley could be a perfect fit. In year one of a four-year, $ 25 million contract, Brantley is hitting .314 with 12 HRs, 53 RBIs and a .382 OBP. Quite possibly, Brantley could flourish in a Reds lineup and be the missing link. The Indians rank 22nd in pitching, so a match could be found for a trade.

2. Andrew Miller - Relief Pitcher (Boston Red Sox)

Boston needs rotation help, but their bullpen is solid; the Reds are the opposite. Adding Andrew Miller (2.53 ERA, 38 games, 10 BB, 53 K) could fill the Sean Marshall void and be affordable for the Reds, as he would not be too expensive given he is a 2015 free agent. Most likely, he would cost the Reds a minor league arm or two who aren't top 10 prospects.

Though he struggled in 2013 for Oakland, Smith has been productive for the lowly Padres in 2014. Hitting .273 with 8 home runs and 24 RBIs in a struggling San Diego lineup, Smith could provide consistent production in the Reds lineup with his .376 OBP. Additionally, Smith has made just two errors since 2012, including none in 2013 or 2014. Being a free agent in 2015, Smith (like Shin-Soo Choo) would likely be a half year rental for the Reds.
