Many rumors are already circulating about the Boston Red Sox shopping pitching to various teams around MLB. If rumors are to be believed, one of the teams interested in the Sox pitching is the Atlanta Braves. While some Braves fans might be excited about the notion of possibly adding another veteran starter to the rotation, that might not be where the Braves are really heading with these trade talks. It seems that they are possibly focused more on the bullpen.
It came out a day or two ago that they were interested in and talking with the Red Sox about Jake Peavy. While Peavy certainly would be a risky choice to add to the starting five, it is somewhat understandable that they would be in talks about this because of the past. On more than one occasion in the team’s recent history they have been at least a small factor in trade talks with a team that was dealing Peavy. Don’t be surprised if they factor in this year as well but that doesn’t mean they will do anything with him.
The bullpen seems to be where their main attention is going to focus and possibly a left-handed reliever at that. Considering the falloff of lefty Luis Avilan, that certainly does make a lot of good sense. The starting rotation probably would be fine without another veteran addition. Chances are slim that anyone the Braves would be willing to pay the price on would really add much value at all. The bullpen however is a different issue. Adding a good shut down arm from the left side like Andrew Miller of the Red Sox could be season-changing in terms of value. Look for their attention to mainly focus on this instead of a veteran starter.
