The 2014 Boston Red Sox had most of the same crew that won the World Series last year, however, this year it almost seemed like there was a black cloud hanging over this team. It was almost surreal. Recently, it looks like that cloud has been lifted.
The Red Sox designated starting catcher A.J. Pierzynski for assignment. This came as a little bit of a surprise just given the fact that he may have been their biggest transaction of the offseason and he was signed to a one-year contract. It always appeared right from the very beginning that he never quite fit in with the rest of the team.
One reason is because of his aggressiveness at the plate, the man has never seen a first pitch that he didn’t like which completely goes against the patient philosophy that Boston completely believes in and practices in every level of their system. Another reason is because he really hasn’t hit at all which was one of the main reasons the Red Sox got him.
The biggest reason he is no longer with the Red Sox could very easily be because of his abrasive personality. Boston knew going in that he wasn’t the most likable person on the planet, but they signed him anyways. My question is why did the Red Sox, that spent all of last season making sure to acquire players who were good for the clubhouse, go out and sign a player who is arguably one of the biggest jerks in MLB?
The story is now coming out that he didn’t buy into the team and its philosophies and it showed. One thing that I noticed about him was how slow he ran and that frustrated me to no end. The reason why I say that is because I don’t think he ran so slow because of foot speed, a person can’t help that. I think he ran so slow because he wasn’t trying and was not all that interested in being a part of the team because things weren’t going well.
Let the Christian Vasquez era begin. Thankfully.
