It has been said before that Chris Johnson is one of the most important members of the Atlanta Braves’ every day roster. That is absolutely seen as true when his last few weeks are looked at, not to mention his awesome last couple of games. Sometimes when the All-Star break comes, along with the tons of players who are very thankful for the time off, some players hate to stop the roll they are on. Right now, Johnson definitely is in that category with two awesome games.
He will probably never lead the team in RBI or even in home runs but he is vital to the success of the Braves’ offense. It is very possible that he could lead the team in batting average by the end of the month of July if he continues going the way he is currently going. When he has his stroke working for him, which is most of the time, he can be every bit as effective as Chipper Jones was in his final few seasons minus the amount of power that Chipper had.
Just think of how important Jones was to the Braves offense when he was playing and that is the same role that we see Johnson in now. In the game Sunday he had a three-run bomb early in the game, was three for three and received an intentional walk late in the game. That was just before a three-run double put the Braves way in front. That kind of problem for opposing teams is what Johnson can cause when he is doing the things he is doing right now. Enjoy the ride if he keeps going the way he is going right now.
