Marlins' First-Half Report Card
There is a potential feelgood story brewing in South Florida. At the halfway point, the Miami Marlins sit only 7.5 games out of first place in the NL East. It is a testament to what this team has done all year and now, looking back on it, let the first-half grading begin.
The Miami Marlins have gotten some serious help out of Giancarlo Stanton this year as he has come back from an injury-riddled 2013 with a vengeance. Stanton is tied for the NL lead in home runs and leads the NL in RBIs. Casey McGehee has come on strong tied for the NL lead in hits. Miami is also 12th in runs scored as a team. The offensive production has definitely been there and should continue to be there all year.
First-Half Grade: B+
As a team the Miami Marlins are sixth in errors committed this season, which is not good for a team with first-place hopes. The Marlins are also 27th in defensive efficiency ratio. It has definitely not been a good year on the defensive end for Miami.
First-Half Grade: D-
When Jose Fernandez went down with Tommy John surgery, the Marlins' rotation took a big hit. However, players like All-Star Henderson Alvarez, Tom Koehler and Nathan Eovaldi have really made strides to get better and it has shown. The back end of the rotation still needs some work, but the starting pitching is above and beyond where it could be.
First-Half Grade: B
Steve Cishek and A.J. Ramos have been as solid as they could be all year. Ramos has pitched lights out before hitting the disabled list. Mike Dunn has seven wins and a 3.53 ERA as a setup man. The bullpen has been a bit inconsistent at times and needs to hold strong for the rest of the year.
First-Half Grade: C+
Through the big injuries and getting the young players on track, Mike Redmond has done a great job this year in his second season. Barring a complete failure of a second half, Miami should set itself up to be in a prime position to make a run next year. All of that is a credit to Redmond and his staff this year. Miami would not be in contention for a division title if it were not for the coaching this season.
