Yankees First-Half Report Card 2014
The New York Yankees are going to have another tough season battling injuries that are crippling every part of the year. With four-fifths of their Opening Day rotation on the disabled list, the offense is going to need a huge jolt to put the team on top of the division.
With the way the New York Yankees' offense had the potential to be, the team should have been mashing home runs all season long. However, New York sits in the middle of the pack in home runs, 24th in RBI and 20th in OPS. Needless to say, Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury and Carlos Beltran have not had outstanding power seasons thus far.
First- Half Grade: D+
Around the diamond, New York has done well. The team is 10th in the majors in fielding percentage and 21st in errors committed, but 25th in defensive efficiency for the season so far. The Yankees have usually been solid defensively, but with the constant defensive changes Joe Girardi has made, the inexperience in some of the rookie infielders has shown.
First-Half Grade: C
This is a tough one. Masahiro Tanaka has carried the rotation since the beginning of the season and with him being out, along with CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova, the rotation is as bleak as it gets. New York cannot rely on Shane Greene, Chase Whitley and 39-year-old Hiroki Kuroda all season and expect to win the division. Something has to give. We will wait to grade this one until the end of the season.
First-Half Grade: Incomplete
One thing you can say about the Yankees is that the bullpen has been there, especially in the latter part of games. Dellin Betances has been great through 40 games this year and David Robertson has recorded 23 saves. Adam Warren and Shawn Kelley have also been decent. David Huff is also starting to prove to be a nice acquisition for the bullpen.
First-Half Grade: B+
The Yankees do have experience in these types of dramatic injury situations. Last year being the main precedent for how to handle this year's team. Joe Girardi is doing a good job of keeping the team together, but him and Kevin Long have to get the offense in gear. The bats have to come alive as the season wears on and that is where the coaching staff will get a higher grade.
