Alfonso Soriano was recently designated for assignment by the Yankees, which means the team has until Wednesday to release or trade their veteran outfielder. Several teams seem to be interested in his services whether it be by trade or waivers. Here are five teams that will vie for his rights.
Why not bring Soriano back to the team where he had his most productive seasons? He's a shell of his former self, but when given regular playing time, Soriano can still play. The Nationals could give him relatively consistent playing time and he could be a key piece down the stretch.
The Mariners are in the thick of the playoff race and could really use another bat. Soriano could provide them with outfield depth and a nice bat off the bench and he could also start on occasion. With a boost to the lineup, the Mariners could really make a case for a playoff berth.
Even though the Braves have a very full outfield, Soriano could provide them with some depth. Having the contingency plan in case of injury definitely can't hurt the Braves when the stretch run of the season comes.
Desperate for some firepower to compete with the division rival Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants could use another power hitting outfielder. If they were able to give him decent playing time, he could get hot and help put them on a run that pushes them past the Dodgers in the division down the stretch.
The Tigers have gotten some pretty good production from young and inexperienced outfielders this season, but they could definitely use a veteran bat. Adding Soriano to the mix could help the on-field results and it could also help develop the team's young outfielders for the future.
