MLB Trade Rumors: Top 5 Landing Spots For Jonathan Papelbon

As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, Jonathan Papelbon wants to be traded to a contender. Several teams could use the Phillies' closer, who is having an exceptional season. If Papelbon is on the move, here are five potential destinations.

Sources say the Angels aren't very interested in Jonathan Papelbon, but that just doesn't make any sense. The back end of the Angels' bullpen has been a disaster in 2014, and the Phillies' closer is having a great season. Jason Grilli doesn't seem to be turning his struggles around anytime soon, so Mike Scioscia's club would undoubtedly benefit from having a solid option to lean on out of the bullpen late in games.

The Dodgers' bullpen has been disappointing in 2014, ranking 12th out of 16 NL teams with a 3.74 ERA. However, Los Angeles closer Kenley Jansen is in the midst of a great season, closing 27 games in 30 opportunities. Trading for Philadelphia's closer makes a lot of sense for the Dodgers, who would likely drop Jansen to an eighth inning role and bring in Papelbon to nail down games. The Papelbon-Jansen combo would be helpful come playoff time.

The Pirates traded Jason Grilli to the Angels but received an even bigger question mark in Ernesto Frieri. Frieri is having a terrible season, and the Pirates need a solid closer in order to compete in a difficult NL Central. A deal between the two sides is unlikely, but Pittsburgh would be smart to deal for Papelbon. The Phillies' closer is pitching lights out this season, and Pittsburgh needs a steady ninth inning arm to rely on.

The closing situation in the Bay Area is uncertain following Sergio Romo's recent demotion, so it makes sense for the Giants to make a deal for Papelbon. San Francisco might be able to pry the Phillies' closer away by offering some young talent, something the Giants desperately need to do in a tight division race. Papelbon could end up helping San Francisco play into October if he is dealt before the trade deadline.

Detroit has all the necessary pieces to buy Papelbon from Philadelphia, and Joe Nathan is having one of the worst seasons of his career. Detroit is seemingly one piece away from being a legitimate World Series contender, so a move for Papelbon would solidify what has been a shaky bullpen thus far. Papelbon has a large contract, but Detroit can't afford for its bullpen's ERA to remain above four.
