Texas Rangers: First-Half Report Card 2014

Coming out of the All-Star break the Texas Rangers own the worst record in the majors. Granted, the club has been butchered by injuries. Four position players have either missed significant time or are done for the season if not longer. Their No. 2 starting pitcher has yet to pitch and won't be back until late-August. Are there any bright spots in Texas?

Even star third baseman Adrian Beltre has a hard time watching the Rangers. The offense is below league average in almost every category. They are hitting .260/.387/.704 while the league is averaging a .255/.397/.716 clip. Most striking is the Rangers' inability to hit the long ball. Their 68 home runs rank second-to-last in the AL while playing half their games in one of the most home run-friendly ballparks in all of the majors.

While errors and fielding percentage are not the best indicators of a defensive club, when your team is second from last in both categories it can not be ignored. Free-agent bust Shin-Soo Choo, Leonys Martin and Alex Rios make up one of the shabbiest defensive outfields in the league.

Is F- the lowest grade possible? If not, this threadbare staff deserves worse. Texas has trotted 12 starters to the mound in their first 95 games. Opponents enjoy a .298 BAA. Their ERA of 5.20 is last, a full 0.34 points higher than the next team. All of this with Yu Darvish, one of the premier starters in the game. He is holding his end of the stick with a sub-three ERA and .233 BAA. That says a ton about the other four rotation guys.

Texas' relief gang sports an upper-tier closer in Joakim Soria and a couple of decent setup men. However, when the starters average 5.1 (non-Darvish) innings per game, a team needs middle relief to get to the good stuff. The Rangers' middle relievers are full of guys who sprinkle ERAs in the high-fives. Overall, their 4.50 ERA is second-to-last in the AL.

Manager Ron Washington is a good skipper. He's proven he can take good teams to the playoffs. General manager Jon Daniels is a joke. Instead of addressing the dire need for starting pitching during the offseason, he went out and brought in some (what were supposed to be) big bats, namely Prince Fielder and Shin-Soo Choo. Fielder is out for the year with a career-threatening neck injury, and Choo has been a bust since day one.
