With just nine days remaining until the MLB Trade Deadline, general managers are manning their cell phones as they begin discussing players who could be on the move. While the usual names continue to be mentioned in trade rumors, there is always a trade or two that come out of nowhere to surprise fans and pundits alike.

I take a look at five bold trades that could (and should) happen before 4 p.m. on July 31, 2014.

Prepare to see many NL Central names on this list. With four teams within three games of first place, all will be looking for ways to improve their chances at winning the division.

For the Reds, Carlos González would give them exactly what they are missing -- an established bat to man left field for now and the future. While injuries have slowed his 2014 season, González is still one of the premier hitters in the game when healthy.

First base has been a revolving door for the Pirates recently as they continually try to improve the position through the trade market. So why not try once more? Despite a decline in his average in 2014, Howard continues to produce with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. He could provide Pittsburgh with another big bat to protect hitters in their lineup. And assuming he brings down his strikeouts, Howard could propel Pittsburgh into the playoffs.

3. Cliff Lee Traded To St. Louis Cardinals

Here another Philly-player heads to the NL Central. The Cardinals could be looking to add another strong starter to the mix, and Lee could fit the bill (they have also been rumored to be interested in David Price). Lee could give St. Louis the boost needed to leap over the Brewers in the division. Despite being owed $ 24 million, the Cards would control Lee in 2015 as well.

2. Starlin Casto Traded To Seattle Mariners

They have surprised many by becoming AL Wild Card leaders, putting them in a position they haven't been in quite some time. Looking to take the next step, the Mariners are in need of replacing Brad Miller at shortstop (.202 AVG, 8 HRs, 25 RBIs). With the Chicago Cubs still looking to stock up for the future (and with strong SS prospects), Starlin Castro could be the perfect fit for the Mariners (.274, 11 HRs, 53 RBIs) in 2014 and going forward.

This is the closest the Royals have been to legitimately reaching the playoffs in quite some time, and they will be looking to make a splash to improve. Their offseason trade for Nori Aoki has not panned out, so why not go out and get the best hitting right fielder in all of baseball? Adding Giancarlo Stanton would take a ton of prospects, but it would also take the Royals to an entirely new level of talent and respectability within the game.
