It's late July and the MLB rumor mill is going at full force. Teams are being connected to other teams' players like clockwork, and the Pittsburgh Pirates are no exception. The Pirates have been connected to several different players and teams in the past week, and here is a collection of five whispers before the trade deadline.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are in need of a starting pitcher for their rotation, and several outlets have named AJ Burnett as their main target. One possible obstacle to a return to Pittsburgh is that the team does not want him to exercise his expensive player option next season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are also in the market for a relief pitcher to help their bullpen. Rumor has it that the Pirates are one of a dozen teams that are scouting and pursuing Philadelphia Phillies left-hander Antonio Bastardo.
In addition to AJ Burnett, the Pirates are also looking at other options to add to their rotation. One name mentioned as a target is Ian Kennedy. One possible roadblock to a possible trade is that the San Diego Padres say they would need to be overwhelmed to trade their veteran right-hander.
AJ Burnett is also not the only reunion the Pittsburgh Pirates could be looking to orchestrate. The team has been scouting the Arizona Diamondbacks' bullpen and one name mentioned in particular is former Pirate pitcher Oliver Perez.
Although the Pittsburgh Pirates are seen as buyers this season, there is a rumor that surfaced regarding trading Starling Marte. The rumor mentioned that the Seattle Mariners were interested in acquiring Marte for a possible price of Taijuan Walker, Nick Franklin and another prospect or relief pitcher.
