Much of their success in the month of July is thanks to great hitting. The entire lineup has shown up at the plate. In July, OF Jayson Werth leads the team with six home runs and 22 runs batted in. Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is right behind him with 18 RBIs and a batting average of .342 for the month.
While many of the Nationals are producing, the leadoff man is the one hitter truly leading the way. OF Denard Span is batting an incredible .360 average for the month of July. He has 16 runs on 32 hits and an on base percentage of .424. Span is performing his duties as the No. 1 hitter in the lineup. He has even tacked on a solid five stolen bases to add to his team best 18 for the year. Matt Williams expressed concern for his streaky hitting early in the season, but Span has put in the work to raise his game to another level. He is working pitchers deep into the count and getting on base.
Thanks to a great month, Span has raised his season average up to .289 and solidified his place in the lineup. He and Werth are two of the best hitters on the team, making the outfield something to fear in Washington.
Look for Span to continue his trend of consistent hitting down the stretch. He seems to have found his groove in the leadoff spot, and the Nationals would be wise to continue letting him do his thing.
