5 Reasons Why Troy Tulowitzki Is Staying Put

There is an incredible amount of speculation surrounding the Colorado Rockies and the future of shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Although the team might get a nice offer, Tulowitzki is staying put for these five reasons.

Troy Tulowtizki's contract is so big that it might scare teams away. He signed a 10-year, $ 157 million contract in 2011 and will be owed $ 20 million annually from 2015-19 including a $ 21 million club option in 2021 with a $ 4 million buyout. If any team thinks the Rockies will pay some of that, they are crazy.

Tulowitzki's longevity is a bit of a concern as well. He's only played more than 140 games in a season three times in his career and missed most of the 2012 season with ankle problems. The team that trades for him will have his contract at least another six years, and he's already 29.

Colorado will probably target high-end prospects in a deal for Tulowitzki. Any team will have to be willing to give up a large haul of young players for him. If a team is really willing to give a lot up for a big money contract, then the Rockies will come away with some highway robbery.

With the owner saying the city of Denver does not deserve a team and having trouble with star players, who really knows what the Rockies want. If anything, the team would balk at any trade prior to the deadline and wait until winter to shop Tulowitzki more aggressively.

What the organization should be doing is repairing the relationship with Tulowitzki. Colorado made a large commitment to him and should live up to that. He is the face of the franchise and someone the Rockies should build around instead of casting off. Ultimately, that could be the deciding factor.
