The Pittsburgh Pirates are known for having one of the best farm systems in baseball. In that system, the Pirates have some of the best and most exciting prospects in baseball. None are more exciting than pitcher Tyler Glasnow. Here are five things Pittsburgh Pirates fans need to know about him.

Tyler Glasnow was drafted in the fifth round of the 2011 MLB Draft straight out of high school and signed for 0,000. He has been overshadowed by other members of that Pirates' draft class, such as Gerrit Cole and Josh Bell, and other top pitching prospect Jameson Taillon. He was not even one of the top 100 available prospects in California in the 2011 draft. So Glasnow has worked his way into being a top 30 prospect in all of baseball.

Glasnow is an extremely tall man, standing at a massive 6-foot-8. He has filled out his frame, adding weight to make him 220 pounds, and this makes him much more athletic. That size makes him an intimidating force on the mound and also allows him to add some extra velocity to his pitches because he is throwing on a downward plane.

Glasnow strikes out players at a clip that seems only possible on a PlayStation game. In 2013, he struck out over 36 percent of the batters he faced in low-A West Virginia and that was the best rate in all of baseball, at any level, since 2001. Glasnow is continuing his ridiculous strikeout numbers this season as he, at one point, struck out at least 11 batters in five straight games in high-A Bradenton.

Glasnow has two plus pitches in his arsenal. He throws a fastball with a strong velocity around 96-97 MPH that looks even faster due to his size. Glasnow also throws a great curve ball that generates most of his strikeout numbers. He also has a change up that he is developing to be his third strong pitch that he can use to get left-handed batters out.

Glasnow is only 20 years old and should be moving up to double-A Altoona this year before making it to Pittsburgh in 2015 or 2016. If he continues to strike out players at his current rate and limits his walks in the minors, he is going to have the potential to be one of the most dominating pitchers in baseball with a chance to be the next pitcher to strikeout 20 batters in a game.
