The Baltimore Orioles are having a dream season. With the team in first place and no signs of letting it go, glory has returned to Camden Yards. But with one unfortunate swing of the bat, the Orioles’ dream season may be in peril. Third baseman Manny Machado was at bat in the third inning against the hated New York Yankees on Monday night when he suffered right knee sprain on a swing.
The fact that he had to be carried off the field is not a good sign. Machado has been battling knee injuries recently. Last season, he had surgery on his left knee which caused him to missed time, and if this injury right his right knee proves to be serious, the Orioles could be in deep trouble.
Machado is one of baseball’s top up-and-coming stars. He entered the game against the Yankees batting .277/.323/.428 this season, and has developed into one of the O’s best infielder. How many times has Machado made SportsCenter’s Top 10 by using the sheer wizardry of his glove?
Machado is the O’s emotional leader. Yes, other players are turning in career seasons, and the team has enough depth to get to the playoffs, but if Machado is gone for a significant amount of time, it could prove fatal to a team that suddenly has World Series aspirations.
If I was an O’s fan, I would be holding my breath.
With Machado’s status still in question Orioles tickets have dropped by almost 15% for their upcoming game against the White Sox.
