The MLB season is coming to a close and awards will be announced shortly after. One of the tightest award races right now is for the race for the NL Rookie of the Year. These are the current five top candidates for the award.

David Peralta has worked his way up the list of NL Rookie of the Year candidates since being called up by the Arizona Diamondbacks. He does not have nearly as many at-bats as other candidates on this list but in his limited time, he has hit .283 with three home runs and an OPS of .796. Peralta is not likely to be a serious candidate but if he keeps hitting like that, he will continue to climb up this list.

Unlike his teammate with the Diamondbacks, Chris Owings has been in the major leagues all year and has performed well. He has been very slick with his glove and his bat is playing well too; he has a .277 average and an OPS of .771. Owings also most likely won't make a serious run for the award because defense isn't valued that highly and his bat is around league average, but he is in contention.

Gregory Polanco was a top prospect in baseball before his call up with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is currently hitting .265 with six home runs and an OPS of .714. He has also made some great plays defensively. While Polanco's numbers aren't as impressive as the other players' on the list, the Pirates are in a pennant race and he has the name recognition to win the award. Polanco could be the dark horse in this race if his production continues.

Jacob deGrom is one of the many young pitchers the New York Mets have and he has been the most impressive of them this year. He is 6-5 with an ERA of 2.87. Because he is having such a good year on a bad team, that gives him even more credit and boosts him higher on the list. A recent shoulder injury and DL stint could derail his chances to win the award but for now, he is still very much alive in the race.

Billy Hamilton has been the favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award since the beginning of the season and that still hasn't changed. Hamilton has the most at-bats of anyone on this list and has put up good and consistent numbers on offense, defense and on the bases. Hamilton has a huge lead right now on the rest of the NL rookies and it will take either a collapse from him or another player stepping up for him to not win this award.
