Predicting Top 5 MLB Strikeout Leaders By End of 2014

Predicting Top 5 MLB Strikeout Leaders By End of 2014

Yu Darvish
Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

With only a few more starts left in the 2014 season, there is only so much time left for pitchers to gain room for the MLB lead in strikeouts. Yu Darvish was the 2013 strikeout king with 277, finishing 37 ahead of the runner-up. However, this season, every player on this list could lead MLB in strikeouts, but who will come up on top?

5. Stephen Strasburg

Stephen Strasburg is known for his strikeout repertoire placing him fifth on this list. With 194 strikeouts, he will be well on his way over the 200 mark for the season. From fifth place to second is only a three-strikeout margin, giving Strasburg room to move up the list.

4. Corey Kluber

Corey Kluber has been a pleasant surprise for the Cleveland Indians this season. With 197 strikeouts, he most likely will have over 225 strikeouts this season. But I believe he will have to be on top of his game to be in the top-three in strikeouts.

3. Felix Hernandez

Tied with Kluber in strikeouts, Felix Hernandez has been the best pitcher in the AL as he will most likely win the Cy Young award this season. Hernandez has carried his team into playoff contention, and they will make sure he pitches as much as possible before season's end, upping his strikeout total.

2. Max Scherzer

Max Scherzer was the runner-up to Yu Darvish for the 2013 strikeout lead and is well on his way to topping the list this season. Currently fourth in MLB, Scherzer will likely to go longer into games for the remainder of the season to keep the Detroit Tigers in playoff contention.

The Detroit Tigers will likely hold the top two spots in MLB in strikeouts with David Price atop the list. Price could contend with Darvish and his 277 strikeouts in 2013 with the pace he is on. Price averages seven innings per start which makes him the favorite to lead MLB in strikeouts.
