Enough should be enough for the Cincinnati Reds when it comes to the ongoing right-handed disaster known as J.J. Hoover, who notched his 10th loss in relief this year on Tuesday while watching his ERA climb to 5.37.

The results for Hoover are so bad that he is single-handedly worming his way to the bad side of the Reds’ franchise records. His 10th loss makes him just the third Reds’ reliever in franchise history to lose 10 games in a season, but one of those, Tom Hume, lost 10 games in 1980 while pitching 137 innings in relief with a 2.56 ERA.

The Reds should do the fans an immediate favor by releasing Hoover immediately, thereby preserving the relie loss record so that Hoover can be spared from forever being recognized as the worst of the worst in franchise history.

Hoover is far from being the sole player to blame for the Reds’ disappointing season or even their recent four-game losing streak, in which Hoover has surrendered walk-off wins twice. However, he sure seems to be the one giving up games the most, even for a bullpen that ranks second-last in ERA (4.03) in the NL with a whopping 24 losses.

Dumping Hoover is not the solution to end the Reds’ woes now that the team is almost certainly out of any kind of playoff contention, but watching Hoover leave the team for good would likely trigger a rare round of applause among Reds fans in what has deteriorated into an absolutely botched season.
