As the calendar month flips to September, the Baltimore Orioles hope to finish the season strong, win the AL East and prepare for the MLB playoffs. Baltimore called up a number of new players and made a few trades as the 25-man roster expands to 40. The additions provide flexibility to the ball club, giving it an injection of speed, defense and left-handed hitting. Here are some of the notable September call-ups and how they will impact the team.

De Aza was recently added to the Orioles via trade with the Chicago White Sox. He will provide depth to the outfield, speed on the base paths and a left-handed bat in the lineup for the Orioles. His 15 steals this season are more than any other player currently on the roster.

Paredes was recently called up from AAA and will provide depth to the infield in Baltimore. He has the ability to play both third and second base, which will be useful after the loss of Manny Machado for the year. He batted .289 in AAA with 21 steals, giving the O's another bandit on the paths.

3. Quintin Berry

Berry is another player that will fulfill the Orioles' need for speed. He has 25 steals in AAA this season, and remarkably has never been caught stealing in MLB, going 26 for 26 in stolen base attempts. Expect the O's to use him as a pinch runner when they need a key base snag.

2. Joe Saunders

Orioles fans will remember Joe Saunders as the winning pitcher in the 2012 AL Wild Card, but the club may not use him in that fashion this time around. Saunders will provide a veteran presence in the bullpen, and has collected a 1.50 ERA in 10 games at AAA-Norfolk. He could make a spot start if necessary, but don't expect Saunders to toe the rubber for the O's in October.

Clevenger has been back and forth with the club this season, and will be with the team for the remainder of September. He will be used as the third catcher and provides value as the only left-handed hitter at the position. Clevenger will be able to give Caleb Joseph and Nick Hundley the occassional day off, keeping both players fresh for the playoffs.
